Abaya Care Labels Explained: What Every Symbol Means
The care label inside your abaya is a tiny instruction manual — but it speaks in symbols that can be confusing if you're not familiar with them. Get these wrong and a luxury abaya can be damaged permanently. Here's a clear guide to every symbol you'll encounter.
Washing Symbols
- Basin with number (e.g. 30): Machine wash at that temperature maximum. Most luxury abayas show 30°C.
- Basin with hand: Hand wash only. Use cool water and a gentle detergent.
- Basin with X: Do not wash — dry clean only. Common on heavily embellished or velvet pieces.
Drying Symbols
- Square: Tumble dry. A dot inside indicates heat setting (one dot = low, two = medium).
- Square with X: Do not tumble dry. Always apply to velvet and embellished abayas.
- Square with line across centre: Dry flat. Important for structured pieces to prevent stretching.
- Square with curved line at top: Hang to dry. The standard for most abayas.
Ironing Symbols
- Iron with one dot: Iron on low heat (suitable for nidha and chiffon).
- Iron with two dots: Iron on medium heat (suitable for cotton-blend pieces).
- Iron with X: Do not iron. Steam instead. Critical for velvet.
- Iron with steam lines and X: Do not steam. Rare, but found on some speciality fabrics.
Dry Cleaning Symbols
- Circle with P: Dry clean with any solvent except trichloroethylene.
- Circle with F: Dry clean with petroleum-based solvents only.
- Circle with X: Do not dry clean.
The Golden Rule for Lusso Moda Abayas
When in doubt, hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, hang to dry, and steam rather than iron. For velvet and heavily embellished pieces, always choose professional dry cleaning.
