How to Pack an Abaya Without Creasing: 5 Travel Tips
Anyone who travels with abayas knows the frustration of pulling a wrinkled piece from a suitcase. The good news: with the right technique, your luxury abaya can arrive at your destination looking like it just came off the hanger. Here's how.
1. Use a Garment Bag
The single best investment for abaya travel is a good garment bag. Hang your abaya inside, fold the bag only once at the bottom, and lay it flat on top of your suitcase contents. This minimises fold lines and protects embellishments.
2. Roll, Don't Fold (for Casual Abayas)
For lightweight nidha or chiffon abayas without embellishments, rolling is surprisingly effective. Lay the abaya flat, roll it loosely from hem to collar, and tuck it inside a clean pillowcase or cloth bag to protect it.
3. Tissue Paper for Embellished Pieces
For velvet or embellished abayas, never fold without acid-free tissue paper between the layers. This cushions the embroidery and prevents the velvet from crushing. Fold as few times as possible.
4. The Dry Cleaner's Plastic Trick
Slip your abaya back into the dry cleaner's thin plastic cover before folding. The plastic reduces friction between layers, which dramatically reduces creasing.
5. Steam on Arrival
Pack a compact travel steamer — they're small, lightweight, and worth every gram. Hang your abaya in the bathroom while showering (steam works wonders), then use a hand steamer for any remaining creases. Never iron velvet directly.
Fabric-Specific Tips
- Velvet: Always hang, never fold. If you must fold, stuff sleeves with tissue and fold as little as possible.
- Crepe: Very forgiving — light steaming removes most travel creases easily.
- Chiffon: Light and packable — rolls without issue and steams instantly.
- Nidha: Structured but resilient. Garment bag or rolling both work well.
